Net Metering

Net metering is one way to measure and value the output of member-owned generation. At Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative, net energy metering is an arrangement between the cooperative and a member that allows the member to install renewable fuel generation at his or her premises and interconnect it with the cooperative’s distribution system.

The intent of the arrangement is to allow the member to meet all, or part, of his or her electricity requirements by using renewable fuel generation. The meter logs kilowatt hours when the member is a net user of electricity. Conversely, the meter credits kilowatt hours at the meter when the member is a net generator of electricity, resulting in a month-ending meter reading that represents net use.

How To Get Started

Are you a member who is interested in net metering? Please follow these steps:

1.  Call SVEC at 1-800-234-7832 or visit your local office (find us by clicking here) to provide preliminary information for net metering at your property.

2.  When you’re ready, submit the Net Metering Interconnection Notification (NMIN) Form to SVEC (the application is available here: 03-01-2020 NMIN).  This represents a member’s official request to the cooperative. The second part of the process is to provide proof of liability insurance by signing our form that can be found here and to provide a current copy of your homeowners insurance declaration page showing the property address and liability coverage.

3.  Once an NMIN Form is received, an SVEC engineer will (within 30 days) review your:

  • Equipment, to ensure that it is appropriately certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Location, to ensure there are no changes necessary with the Cooperative’s distribution system.
  • System’s size, to ensure that the generating facility will not produce more energy than what was used in the previous year (Detailed regulatory information is available from the State Corporation Commission by clicking Order Adopting Regulations).

4.  SVEC will let you know if your design is approved for interconnection and you’re approved to build your system.

5.  Once installation is complete, resubmit the NMIN with Section 5 completed or with a passed county inspection report, along with the $50 net meter inspection fee.

6.  SVEC will set an appointment to conduct an on-site inspection for interconnection and net meter exchange.

7.  You’re finished!
